Uganda’s food system is vulnerable to contamination at multiple points, from production to consumption. Biological hazards such as pathogenic bacteria, viruses, and fungi. Physical contaminants like foreign objects and pests, and chemical hazards including pesticide residues
and heavy metals, all compromise food safety

Food safety in Uganda remains a critical public health and economic concern, with foodborne diseases affecting an estimated 1.3 million people annually. This report provides a comprehensive, evidence-based analysis of the sources, impacts, and current
gaps in Uganda’s food safety landscape, with a special focus on aflatoxins. It brings together the
latest research, policy analysis, and practical recommendations from leading experts, practitioners,
and stakeholders in the field.
Bwambale has led major nutrition and food system programs across Uganda, promoting strategic interventions to combat malnutrition and improve dietary outcomes..
As Country Coordinator of the Food Safety Coalition of Uganda, he has championed national initiatives, policy development, and local ordinances to strengthen food safety systems.
He has successfully trained media, civil society, and community leaders, facilitating stakeholder coordination and institutional strengthening for sustainable food and nutrition solutions.
He has led impactful research on dietary diversity and childhood stunting, and coordinated capacity-building efforts for media, CSOs, and community leaders

Bwambale Benard is a seasoned Public Health Nutritionist and Food Systems Specialist with over 7 years of experience in Uganda’s health and nutrition sector.
He specializes in food systems, nutrition governance, policy advocacy, capacity building, and program development.
He is currently the Country Coordinator for the Food Safety Coalition of Uganda and the Head of Programs at the Global Consumer Center (CONSENT).
He is currently pursuing a Ph.d in public health. He holds a Master of Public Health (Health Promotion) from Uganda Martyrs University and a Bachelor of Science in Human Nutrition & Dietetics from Kyambogo University. He is also pursuing a Postgraduate Diploma in Project Planning & Management..
He has managed food safety, nutrition, and refugee health programs, including leading nutrition governance work in the Rwenzori region and refugee settlements.
He established District Nutrition Coordination Committees, developed city food safety ordinances, and led multi-sectoral research and policy engagement initiatives.
He has worked with Food for the Hungry, Action Africa Help, Kabarole Research Centre, and currently works with FoSCU and CONSENT.
He is a member of the Allied Nutrition Professionals of Uganda and various national and district-level Nutrition and Food Safety Committees.
He is skilled in SPSS, Kobo Toolbox, DHIS2, MS Office, and excels in leadership, communication, and problem-solving.
